For those of you that are relatively new to sewing, a great project to start with is a tote bag!
They are not only less time-consuming and structurally easier to understand than clothing, it's a great way to practice sewing straight seams.
All you need to start with is about 1/2yd of medium to heavier weight fabric (cotton canvas, denims, cotton twills, canvas linens, etc.) and some straps. I personally like to use nylon straps for a comfort and durability, as well as making the tote look a little more modern and edgy.
From there, you can increase the level of difficulty by adding panels, creating textures on your fabrics, and even lining!
If you would like to learn how to make totes with me, please visit my sewing lessons link on this blog. We can do this together!
Sincerely,
Sumie
